Fair Play For Women have recently highlighted the potential risks to women in prison if Gender Recognition Act (GRA) reforms and self-declaration of gender become law in England and Wales. We now consider the impact of any changes on probation hostels and the risks not just to women offenders but also to the local community.
ITV programme ‘Good Morning Britain’ featured Fair Play woman Dr Nicola Williams, who researched our article on transgender prisoners. During the 13-minute ‘Trans Prison Swap’ spot Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid talked with Nicola and India Willoughby about whether transgender prisoners should be allowed to choose if they serve their sentence in a male or female jail. I was honoured to attend the discussion in Westminster, as a representative of Fair Play For Women, around Maria Miller’s proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act 2004. This was the first time critical views had been heard! The room was packed with MPs, medical, legal and educational professionals.
