Questions for left-wing people who support self-definition as a woman

It appears that the Labour Party in the UK have unofficially and undemocratically decided, without consulting party members or having any sort of vote, that anyone can self-define as a woman (note: not as men) and therefore apply for all-women shortlists, at least in under-25 categories so far –

A letter to the woman who called me a TERF

We found this amazing letter on Mumsnet and approached the author for permission to share. It is powerful and needs to be heard. To the woman who shrieked at me that I am a bigot and a terf and a hateful transphobe for defending women’s rights, Ten, fifteen years from

Dear Labour Party: Please consult ordinary women

Several Labour Party women have written that they welcome male applicants into female leadership programmes, if they identify as women. We feel that organisations are deaf to the majority concerns of women. Should much-needed opportunities for females be offered instead to males? Fair Play Women ask the Labour Party to reconsider. Read our letter here.

Miscarriages in pub toilets. Is gender neutral ready?

A quarter of pregnancies miscarry, and most miscarriages happen in public toilets. We wouldn’t need those safer spaces if the world outside the Ladies’ was fully accepting of women’s right to privacy & dignity, of our desire not to be stalked and groped, of our naturally unpolished looks and our hormonally-active bodies. But it isn’t. If we’re to be forced into sharing with males, they’re going to have to wise up and shut up.

LBC pundit James O’Brien shuts down women as bigots #himtoo

James O’Brien of LBC took a call from Kellie of Wiltshire, expressing her thoughts on gender identity and whether outlets like Topshop should allow anyone who identifies as a woman or girl into their female changing rooms. We were outraged to hear the bullying and misogynistic way the call was handled. James would not let her speak, shut her down, mocked her, and implied she was a bigot for not agreeing that sex is in the ‘soul’. Complain to LBC!

Everyday sexual assaults – one woman’s timeline

#MeToo – One woman’s lifetime in everyday sexual assaults. There have been too many to count, so these are some that stuck in my mind. There’s nothing special about me: all women suffer everyday sexual assaults, and many get it far worse. This isn’t inevitable – men can be better; plenty of men are. I try to figure out why so many men are predators, and how women are trained to put up with it. (Medium-long read, with lots of pictures.)

Being gender-divergent

Kay Green explains why she says she’s a transgender woman. Branded a rebel as a girl, Kay never managed to be the kind of young woman other people wanted her to be. She soon realised the real problem was gender, but struggled to find her place. Now aware of her autistic traits and loving her life, she says the women’s movement needs to explain to gender-divergent men and women that you can’t change sex but can change your gender.

In a sexist society, sex matters

The passing of a self-declaration law together with removal of Schedule 3 exceptions would see the current delicate balance of rights between ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ in the Equality Act overturned. Those confident that new legislation will not impact women’s rights should not fear discussion; the left must consider the impact of further changing how sex is defined.

Things I wish my therapist had said while I was pursuing medical transition

There is a huge, fast-growing community of gender transition desisters, resisters and detransitioners. Their voices are quiet because of vicious attacks by their former trans support groups, and because they’re traumatised. The process often brings incredible self-insight and perspective. In four powerful artworks, young detransitioner Cari expresses what lay behind her dysphoria. We review the social forces that focus a person’s identity on their ‘gender’.

‘Feminist Men’ throwing women under a bus

Re-posted from Smashing Gender Change by the admirable Hope “Street Voice” Lye: The ‘Not Guilty’ verdict for Ched Evans in his recent re-trial for rape has left many women angry and rightfully so. This has sent rape trials back 30 years where the defence can use any means to attack the victim
