Law reform
In 2015 the Women and Equalities Committee of the House of Commons conducted an inquiry into equality for transgender (trans) people and in January 2016 published its report. This was the catalyst for a series of changes in the UK. Although the law was not changed, policy guidance issued by the EHRC tended towards accepting people's self-declared gender. In 2018 the government adopted the proposal from the committee's report to simplify the process by which someone could change their legal sex and get a new birth certificate in its proposed reform of the Gender Recognition Act, and conducted a consultation on the proposals. The results are due to be published in 2019.
